A recent improvement project has strengthened the long-term vitality of Benham’s Grove, a picturesque estate dating back to the 19th century. In 2025, the City completed a thoughtfully designed event center that complements the historic character of the campus while expanding opportunities for year-round use.

“Transitioning from a temporary outdoor tent to a permanent structure allows us to significantly extend our event season. Each year, we had to turn away guests due to capacity limitations, especially during colder months,” Benham’s Grove Administrator Randal Bishop said.

The project also included upgrades to the Gerber House, including a renovated kitchen that now functions as a serving kitchen and the removal of a dividing wall to better connect the living and dining rooms.

“By introducing a new, year-round community facility on the opposite end of the property from the Gerber House, we ensure that the historic buildings remain the focal point of our campus. It is important that we continue to preserve and invest in these important pieces of our community’s heritage,” Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton said.

Additional improvements included updates to the cottage, removal of the barn’s second floor, and enhancements to lighting, flooring, restrooms and accessibility. The project also reconfigured parking to add approximately 50 additional spaces.

LWC, Inc., architects of the new event center, designed the structure to complement the subtle, elegant architecture of the historic buildings on campus while maintaining the integrity of the site.
