An enhancement strategy is underway to ensure the vitality of Benham’s Grove, a picturesque estate dating back to the 19th century. Construction commenced in 2024 on a meticulously-planned event center designed to harmonize with the historic structures on the campus, thus preserving their architectural integrity.
"Transitioning from a temporary outdoor tent to a permanent structure allows us to significantly extend our event season. Each year, we have to turn away numerous guests because of our capacity limitations, especially during colder months," Benham’s Grove Administrator Randal Bishop said.
The ongoing enhancement initiative for the Gerber House includes kitchen upgrades to transform it into a functional serving kitchen, along with the integration of the living and dining rooms by removing a dividing wall.
"By introducing a new, year-round community facility on the opposite end of the property from the Gerber House, we ensure that the historic buildings remain the focal point of our campus. It is imperative that we safeguard and invest in these integral components of our City's heritage," Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton said.
Additionally, the project entails refurbishments to the cottage, as well as the removal of the barn's second floor and enhancements to lighting, flooring, bathrooms and overall accessibility. A reconfiguration of the parking area will add an extra 50 spaces.
LWC, Inc., architects of the new event center, were deliberate in crafting a structure that complements the subtle yet elegant architecture of the historic buildings on campus, rather than overshadowing them.
